4/5/2005

Vanderbilt signee Christina Wirth became the third Commodore in the last three signing classes to take part in the McDonald’s All-American Game played at Bethel College in Mishawaka, Ind. Wirth Scored two points, grabbed two rebounds and blocked two shots in helping the West Team defeat the East, 80-64.

Wirth also took home some hardware as she and Athens (Ala.) High School’s Richard Hendrix has won a little hardware as the two combined to win the team-ball shooting contest. In team-ball competition, a male and female player shoot from different spots on the floor for a combined score.

Wirth from Mesa, Ariz., will graduate from Seton Catholic High School this spring. For the second straight season, she was named The Chandler Republic’s Small School (Class 3A-1A) Player of the Year. Wirth was the only senior on the 2004-05 All-Arizona team.

She also earned a spot on the U.S. Junior World Team that won a gold medal last summer and recently became the first female player from Arizona to be named to the McDonald’s All-America Team.

The 6-foot-1 Wirth led Seton to the Class 3A championship game, but the Sentinels fell just short as Winslow won a second straight title. She averaged 23.6 points, 10.6 rebounds and two assists as a senior, shooting 53 percent from the floor and 79 percent from the free-throw line. Her career point total is 2,550, second in state history behind Julie Brase of Tucson Catalina Foothills, who scored 2,913 from 1995-98.

Wirth joins two current Commodores as past McDonald All-Americans. Dee Davis and Liz Sherwood competed in the 2003 games in Davis’ hometown, Cincinnati, Ohio.
