HOUSTON, TX—Vanderbilt’s sixth ranked bowling team won three of five games enroute to a seventh place position after the first day of Stephen F. Austin’s Stormin’ Ladyjack Classic.

The Commodores began with three straight wins over Sacred Heart, St. Francis-Brooklyn and UAB, then had a bye round before being upset by Prairie View and losing to Central Missouri, both by narrow margins.

“There are a lot of quality teams here and you have to execute to win,” Coach John Williamson said. “Our level of execution is not where we want it to be at this time of the year and at this caliber of tournament. We had too many missed makeable spares. We will regroup tonight and I expect a better day tomorrow.”

Freshman Katie Stark, bowling in the leadoff spot, had the team’s top average (208) while Nicole Powell, bowling in five of the six games, and Giselle Poss were also over 200 at 205 and 200 respectively. Poss had a streak in the third and fourth games when she registered 16 strikes in 20 attempts.

The Commodores used a rotation of Stark, Powell, Rebeca Reguero, Poss and Robyn Renslow the last five games. Amanda Fry began the day in the two spot.

Vandy will square off against Monmouth at 9:25 a.m. Saturday. Games are streamed on the program’s USTREAM channel.

Top rated Nebraska went 4-1 on the day and leads in total pin fall, averaging 219.4, followed by host SFA, Long Island-Brooklyn and Sam Houston State. Complete tournament standings and scores are found on the attachment.
