Birmingham, AL – The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team was picked to finish fourth overall while the men’s team was chosen fourth in the Eastern Division according to media voting at the Southeastern Conference Media Days, Oct. 25-26, at the Birmingham Marriott.
Melanie Balcomb’s fifth squad at Vanderbilt (85) was predicted to finish behind Tennessee (19), Georgia (48) and LSU (51). Tennessee was picked to finish first in the league by all 19 media voting in the women’s poll.
Commodore senior guard Dee Davis and senior forward Carla Thomas both were chosen All-SEC Second Team honorees by the attending media. Davis earned First Team All-SEC honors from the league coaches at the end of last season after leading the SEC in assists with 6.8 per game. Thomas earned honorable mention All-SEC accolades from the Associated Press a year ago while averaging 12.4 points and 5.9 rebounds.
Tennessee’s Candace Parker was selected as the SEC’s Player of the Year.
The Vanderbilt (138) men’s squad, guided by eighth-year head coach Kevin Stallings, was chosen fourth in the SEC Eastern Division behind defending national champion Florida (30), Kentucky (62) and Tennessee (84). Florida received 28 of 29 votes to finish atop the East. Kentucky took the other vote.
Junior swingman Shan Foster garnered Second Team All-SEC recognition from the league’s media. Foster enters the 2006-07 campaign as the SEC’s third-leading returning scorer. He led the Commodores last season averaging 15.9 points and also ranked among the SEC’s top 3-point shooters converting 41.5 percent from beyond the arc.
Florida’s Joakim Noah was tabbed the SEC’s Player of the Year on the men’s side.
