The Commodores battled gusting winds and a very difficult Tulsa Country Club on Tuesday in the first round of the NCAA Championship, finishing day one with a team total of +23, 303, and in a tie for 13th. Junior Kendall Martindale led Vanderbilt with a two-over par, 72, and is currently in a tie for 13th on the individual leader board.

The Tulsa Country Club, set up as a par-70, 6,194-yard set up for the week, showed its teeth to the 24 best teams in women’s collegiate golf, who also encountered 20 to 25 miles per hour winds throughout the day.

Martindale’s two-over par, 72, tied for the 13-best total of the day, and was Vanderbilt’s top finisher Tuesday. The Commodores also counted a five-over par, 75 from freshman Simin Feng, a 76 from junior Irina Gabasa, and an 80 from freshman Antonia Scherer. Jennifer Hahn carded a first-round 81.

“It’s not the start we were looking for or the start we were expecting,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “The girls played with tremendous effort today in some really tough conditions. Unfortunately, we weren’t sharp at times and that led to some big numbers. The great thing is that we still have three days left and will stick with the process and try to climb back into it one shot at a time. Kendall looked really good today and I was impressed with the way Irina hung in there after a rough start, shooting one under on the back.”

Oklahoma is the team leader in the clubhouse after day one with a team score of eight-over par, 288. Behind the Sooners is number-two ranked UCLA at 11-over, 291, and a trio of teams, Duke, USC, and Arizona State, in a tie for third with a 13-over, 293.

Doris Chen of USC, Tonje Daffinrud of Denver, and Lauren Kim of Stanford are tied atop the individual standings after each carded a three-under, 67.

The second of four rounds continues Wednesday in Tulsa, with the Commodores teeing off at 7:30 a.m. Central time off of the 10th tee.
