DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Vanderbilt carded its best round of the tournament at 9-over-par 297 to finish in sixth place at 48-over 1200 following the final round of the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship at the LPGA International Legends Course (Par 72, 6,351 yards).
The Commodores were 30 shots behind tournament-winner Duke who claimed its third consecutive national title after finishing at 18-over 1170.
The sixth-place finish for the Commodores marks the second time in four seasons Vanderbilt has concluded the NCAA Championship in the top third of the 24-team event. Vanderbilt took fifth place at the 2004 competition.
“It’s really a tribute to these players,” said Vanderbilt head coach Martha Richards who has taken three Commodore squads to the NCAA Championship during her seven-year tenure. “To finish sixth at such a great event that features such a competitive field really shows what strong competitors they are and how much fight they possess.”
Vanderbilt’s top individual finisher, sophomore Jacqui Concolino, struggled in fourth-round play tying for ninth place at 8-over 296 after a 7-over 79. Stacy Lewis of Arkansas won medalist honors after fired a tournament best 6-under 66 on Friday to finish at 6-under 282 for the four-round event.
Concolino posted bogies on three of her first six holes and was 3-over at the turn. A double bogey on No. 11 and three bogeys on three of the last four holes dropped her into a tie for ninth.
“Jacqui got frustrated with some bogeys on the early holes, it snowballed and got the better of her,” Richards said. “It’s really a good learning experience for her about competing at the NCAA Championship. She will only continue to get better.”
Despite dropping five places in the individual standings on the final day, Concolino concludes her season with 10 Top 10 finish in 12 tournaments. The National Golf Coaches Association at its annual awards banquet named Concolino First Team All-America following the tournament. It marked the sophomore’s second All-America honor in as many seasons.
“Jacqui has been outstanding and proven herself to be one of the nation’s top players throughout the season,” Richards said. “She has truly earned and is well deserving of this accomplishment.”
Freshman Brooke Goodwin registered her best round of the event with a 1-under 71 to jump 28 positions in the standings to finish tied for 50th at 18-over 306. After posting a 2-over 38 on the front nine holes, Goodwin carded Vanderbilt’s best performance of the day on the backside at 3-under 33. Birdies on Nos. 11, 15 and 17 set the stage for Goodwin’s score.
“Brooke wasn’t able to get anything going at the tournament until today,” Richards said. “But she’s tough and went out and put in a great round of golf.”
Senior Chris Brady moved up six spots to tie for 30th place at 14-over 302 after a 2-over 74 on Friday. Fellow senior Kristen Svicarovich slipped four places after a 4-over 76 to finish the tournament tied for 46th at 17-over 305.
Junior Liebelei Lawrence carded a 4-over 76 on the final day to finish tied for 60th place at 20-over 308.
