The Vanderbilt women’s golf team began their season with a third-place finish at the 36-hole Cardinal Fall Kickoff in Duluth, Ga., at the Berkeley Hills Country Club, with sophomore Courtney Zeng leading the way for the Commodores with a two-over par, 146 (74-72), which placed her in a tie for fifth.
The Commodores, who tied with Augusta for third place with a team score of 600 (304-296), finished 15 shots behind team champion Georgia and nine strokes back of second-place Auburn.
Vanderbilt’s other scores on the day included a 150 (77-73) from freshman Abbey Carlson in her first collegiate tournament, which placed her in a tie for 12th, a 152 (76-76) from junior Alexandra Farnsworth , a 153 (78-75) from senior Kate Sborov, and a 159 (77-82) from freshman Alison Armstrong.
Seniors Antonia Scherer and Lauren Johnson each played as individuals, with Scherer carding a 163 (86-77) and Johnson a 170 (84-86).
“As a team, our mindset is to get better everyday,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “Today was a day where we got better as the day progressed. It was great watching Courtney birdie four of her last five. We’re young and relatively inexperienced and weren’t quite sure what to expect. It was good to get a few competitive rounds under our belt before the Mason and we now have a better idea of how we can prepare for the Mason next week.”
Vanderbilt returns to the course at their own Mason Rudolph Championship September 16-18 on the Vanderbilt Legends Club North Course.
