Vanderbilt student-athletes continue to author a string of exemplary success in the classroom.
In the NCAA’s newly released Academic Progress Rates (APR) for the 2016-17 academic year, a total of 11 Commodore athletic programs finished with perfect 1000 APR scores:
- Baseball
- Men’s Basketball
- Men’s Golf
- Men’s Tennis
- Women’s Basketball
- Women’s Cross Country
- Bowling
- Women’s Golf
- Lacrosse
- Soccer
- Women’s Track
Vanderbilt football (988), swimming (989) and women’s tennis (969) also earned exceptional APR scores.
“While we certainly love and celebrate all of our victories on the field, the track, the diamond, the courts and in the pool, Vanderbilt is an educational institution, and our focus is on education,” said David Williams II, Vice Chancellor for Athletics and University Affairs and Athletics Director. “Graduation rates, grade-point averages and APR numbers are just as important as winning percentage. The APR numbers are true indicators of academic success and movement toward a college degree. That is who we are, and we are proud of it.”
COMMENCEMENT 2018: VU student-athletes celebrate degrees
Each Division I team calculates an annual Academic Progress Rate (APR), which is based on the eligibility, graduation and retention of each student-athlete. The score can also serve as a predictor of graduation success. For example, a score of 930 equates to a 50 percent graduation rate. Any score below 930 can result in NCAA sanctions or penalties.
The highest achievement that can be earned through the APR program is the Public Recognition Award, which honors programs ranking in the top 10 percent nationally in multiyear APR scores in each sport. In the latest multiyear APR scores released by the NCAA, seven Vanderbilt programs earned Public Recognition Awards:
- Football
- Men’s Cross Country
- Men’s Golf
- Men’s Tennis
- Bowling
- Women’s Golf
- Lacrosse
*Vanderbilt Men’s Cross Country does not have an annual APR rate this year, but the program’s past APR scores qualified the team for the Public Recognition Award.
