In a rare dual match format, the Vanderbilt Commodores defeated Texas, 310-304, in an 18-hole matchup at the Vanderbilt Legends Club’s North Course this weekend, with senior Marina Alex leading all golfers after she posted a 73.
Both teams played six players, with the top four scores counting for each team.
The event was scheduled after both teams had a previous round rained out earlier this season. Teams are allowed to make up rounds later in the year to make up for earlier missed rounds.
“It was a big win for us, especially against a good team in a format that we’re not used to,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “Our team took on the challenge and persevered through a windy day, tough playing conditions, and a difficult golf course.
“It was great to play on this course, against a nationally-ranked team, under these conditions. We got a good look at the way the golf course is going to be set up for the national championship.”
Other scores for Vanderbilt were freshman Irina Gabasa’s 76, sophomore Rene Sobolewski’s 77, junior Anna Leigh Keith’s 78, junior Lauren Stratton’s 79, and freshman Kendall Martindale’s 81.
The Longhorns were led by Bertine Strauss, who shot a 75.
Vanderbilt returns to the course this weekend at the SEC Championship in Fayetteville, Ark. The festivities begin on Friday.
