VU and SEC hosting Minority Officials Clinic

March 17, 2016

Vanderbilt Athletics is teaming up with the Southeastern Conference to host a Minority Football Officials Clinic Friday and Saturday in the Commodores’ football facilities. The clinic is believed to be the first of its kind.

About 75 minority football officials from across the Southeast will be on hand Friday to hear Vanderbilt Head Coach Derek Mason welcome the group.

“I’m very excited about this clinic,” said Steve Shaw, the SEC Coordinator of Football Officials. “The goal and expectation of this clinic is to help develop young and upcoming minority officials as we work toward building the next generation of officials in college football and the SEC.”

The SEC has arranged for several guest speakers, including Vanderbilt Director of Athletics David Williams on Saturday and the attendees will learn about the league’s officiating protocols.

The group will then officiate Vanderbilt’s scrimmage to cap their clinic experience. The event is a collaborative effort of the SEC, the Big Ten and the NCAA.
