Head coach Kevin Stallings and junior guard/forward Jeffery Taylor met with media members from throughout the country at SEC Media Day on Thursday in Hoover, Ala.

Kevin Stallings, Vanderbilt, Men’s Head Coach

On his concerns and likes for this coming season:
“I like my team’s want to and their willingness. I have never had a team work as hard in the off seasons as this team has worked. I don’t think I have ever had a team put in as much time individually; being in the gym, doing their own thing and trying to make their game better.”

On his team this year:
“I think we have as good a set of wings in Jenkins and Taylor, as there is in the league. I’m not saying we have the best, but they are as good as anybody. I think we have some depth. We have some experience despite the fact that we only have one senior. We have (Brad) Tinsley, (Jeff) Taylor, (Lance) Goulbourne and (Andre) Walker; those guys have been playing since they were freshmen. They have played and contributed a lot. Obviously, roles will shift losing (A.J.) Ogilvy and (Jermaine) Beal and we will have to have guys take different responsibilities, but I am very hopeful about our team’s prospects.”

On the competition in the East this season:
“I think Florida will be good. I think it is probably, to me, as open as it has ever been since I have been coaching here. I don’t think the league has a team like last year’s Kentucky team. I don’t see someone as dominant as they were. I will be surprised if one comes to the forefront in that way.”

On being picked fifth in the East:
“It doesn’t bother me. Most years we have probably finished higher than we have been picked. We are the popular choice of being picked low.”

Jeffery Taylor, Vanderbilt, Jr., F

On last season:
“It was hard right after the loss, the season ending the way it did. We thought we could have done a lot in the NCAA tournament, but overall we had a really good year. It was something we could reflect on and think about. Everybody could think about what they could improve on during the summer and that’s what we did, we worked on it.”

On the division this season:
“There are good teams in our league, especially on our side. It is going to be really competitive this year; I feel that it is a toss up.”

Concerning roles on the team this year:
“Roles will be different since we lost two of our highest scorers. People are going to have to step up and accept their roles.”
