FRANKLIN, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s golf team had one of its most frustrating rounds of the season during the third round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship on Thursday, May 24, at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
The Commodores shot a 23-over par round of 311 to fall into a tie for 16th. Holes 10-18, which were the first nine Vanderbilt played, saw the four Commodores that scored play them at 17-over par.
Marina Alex had the most solid round for Vanderbilt. The senior carded a four-over 76 with a matching 38 on each side. Alex’s lone birdie of the day came on the par-five ninth to conclude the round.
On the individual leaderboard, Alex is tied for 23rd and nine strokes behind the leaders (-4).
Lauren Stratton struggled out of the gate. She opened her round with a double bogey on 10 and a triple bogey on 11, en route to an eight-over 44 on the opening nine. She did recover nicely on her second nine, shooting a one-over 37 with the only non-par hole a five on the par-four eighth.
Kendall Martindale finished at five-over thanks to back-to-back birdies on eight and nine to cap her round. Martindale made the turn at three-over.
Anna Leigh Keith also carded a five-over 77. Keith was four over at the turn before adding a birdie and two bogeys on the second nine.
Rene Sobolewski had the high round of the day for the Commodores, shooting a 12-over 84 that did not count towards the team score.
Vanderbilt Head Coach Greg Allen was disappointed, to say the least.
“Rough day,” Allen said. “Just a terrible start. We played 16 like we had never seen the hole before and put three balls in the water. We just couldn’t stop the downward spiral.”
Looking for the positives, Allen is hopeful the Commodores will play better with a morning tee time for the final round.
“We got a morning tee time and we played well yesterday with a morning tee time, so hopefully we can do the same thing,” Allen said.
He would be happy with a top-10 finish, something his last two Commodore teams have accomplished.
“We need a good round to maybe climb back into tenth,” Allen said. “We’ve done that the last few years and it would be nice to keep that streak going. We’re resilient and they’ll forget about this round in about an hour.”
Vanderbilt will enter the final day tied for 16th with Michigan State. The Commodores and Spartans will be joined by Pepperdine (T-18th/+39) on the 10th tee at 8:28 a.m.
Alabama leads the championship entering the fourth and final round. The Tide led by as many as 15 strokes during the day, but played the final four holes at 10-over par to close the day at 13-over. Southern California is in second at 15-over, while Purdue, South Carolina and Virginia are tied for third at +19.
Oklahoma’s Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Arizona State’s Giulia Molinaro share the individual lead, both at four-under (212) for the championship. Right behind them is a pair of SEC players. Alabama’s Brooke Pancake and LSU’s Tessa Teachman are tied for third at -3 (213). Also under par are South Carolina’s Katie Burnett and Virginia’s Portland Rosen, who each sit at one-under for the championship.
