CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Vanderbilt rallied to a top-10 finish Sunday at the UNC Finley Golf Course against a stacked field and missing a few key members of the lineup.
To conclude her first tournament on the season, Celina Sattekkau set the pace for the Commodores shooting 2-under-par through 54 holes. Sattelkau recorded a 2-over-par 74 on the day.
“That certainly wasn’t our best today,” head coach Greg Allen said. “The conditions for sure were a factor but we’ve got to do a better job in managing our game in the wind.”
Vandy as a team ended the tournament at 6-over-par and in a two-way tie for ninth with host North Carolina at 870. The Dores were 23 strokes back of champion Wake Forest (-17). The Demon Deacons were led by individual winner Rachel Kuehn with a three-day total of 205 and an 11-under-par effort.
“I’m really proud of how Tess played this weekend,” Allen said. “That young lady continues to get better every tournament. And, I just can’t express the amount of strength and courage Celina showed this week, especially today. This is the first time she’s walked 54 holes since the summer, and I know she played through a lot of discomfort with very little energy. She is a competitor and a champion and found a way to get it done.”
Tess Davenport tied for 21st, shooting a solid 1-under-par for the tournament and tallied a 72 on Sunday.
Virginie Ding (+4) tied for 43rd, Louise Yu (+8) tied for 61st, and Ariel Yu (+14) tied for 84th.
“We have a very short turnaround before heading to Old Waverly on Saturday. If all goes well, we could see Celina and Auston both in the lineup and that fires me up.”
Next up for Vanderbilt is The Ally at Old Waverly scheduled for Oct. 25-27 at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi.
