NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Commodore volleyball dropped a 3-0 (25,23, 25-20, 25-21) decision to No. 14 Minnesota Friday night at Memorial Gymnasium.
For the fourth consecutive match, Kamryn Chaney led Vanderbilt (2-3) in kills with 11. The junior also tallied four service aces, matching her season high. Freshman Maya Witherspoon came off the bench to contribute three kills and a pair of aces for Vandy.
The Gophers (4-1) outblocked the Dores 12-2, spearheaded by seven total blocks by Lourdes Myers. Julia Hanson led Minnesota’s offensive efforts registering 13 kills and hitting .534. Stella Swenson dished out 30 assists and an ace for the Gophers who hit .247 as a team.
The first set was neck-and-neck from start to finish. Vandy took a 15-12 lead off a 5-2 run, which Minnesota answered with a 5-point run of its own to gain a 17-15 advantage. Jackie Moore recorded a pair of kills to make the score 24-23, Minnesota, but a kill by Hanson closed out the 25-23 set win for the Gophers. Moore had five kills off six attempts for a hitting percentage of .833 in set 1.
Similar to the first, the second set was back-and-forth until Minnesota scored six unanswered points to pull away near the end of the set and lock in a 25-20 win.
Down 10 in the third set, Vanderbilt fought back to score 10 of its 21 points after Minnesota had reached the 20-point mark. Chaney scored five of the Dores’ final 10 points off three kills and two aces.
Next, Vanderbilt will head to the west coast for two road matches at California and UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday and Thursday.
