JONESBORO, Ark. – The No. 2-ranked Commodores notched a fourth-place finish to close out their time at the Mid-Winter Invitational, compiling a 7-5 tournament record over the weekend.
“We did a good job the first two days competing for a championship,” head coach John Williamson said. “Today got away from us. Our energy and execution weren’t at the level needed to win events like this.”
Vanderbilt entered Sunday’s competition as the No. 2 seed after a 4-0 sweep on Saturday. Freshman Sydney Bohn finished third individually and was named to the all-tournament team. She ran off scores of 227, 191, 227, 232 and 266 and averaged 228.6 pins per game.
In the opening match, Vandy dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 3 Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks fired off scores of 235, 201, 223 and 215, while the Commodores found themselves bowling four games under 200 pins.
The Dores improved their pin counts in the next match with No. 7 Wichita State, compiling scores of 194, 236, 213 and 203. The Shockers, however, answered with games of 224, 248, 226 and 215 to take the match, 4-0.
In the consolation match, fifth-ranked Youngstown State and Vandy traded wins through six games, but the Penguins pulled out the win in Game 7, sealing their 4-3 win.
Wichita State won the Mid-Winter Invitational after defeating Jacksonville State in the final match.
“We’ll regroup and have a much needed weekend off and come back in two weeks looking for something more than we had this weekend,” Williamson said.
Vanderbilt will have a weekend off before traveling to Greensboro, North Carolina, for the North Carolina A&T Stallings Invitational Feb. 28 to March 2.
