EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, NJ—Vanderbilt won four of five matches during Friday’s first day of Monmouth’s Invitational and ended the day in fifth place in the field of 16.
The Commodores got nice wins over seventh-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson and Top 20 Long Island-Brooklyn along with topping Franklin Pierce and Saint Francis (NY) but stumbled in the afternoon finale against Sam Houston State, which is the first day leader.
Looking at the scoreboard, no team was able to conquer the King Pin Bowl Lanes. Sam Houston’s 195.4 average over the 5-game Baker format was the best anyone could muster. Vanderbilt managed 5-game scores of 934-915-971-970 and the 875 effort against Sam Houston for a 186.6 average.
“We really didn’t bowl that badly but we missed way too many spares to score well,” said Coach John Williamson. ”
The Commodores stuck with a rotation of Adel Wahner, Emily Rigney, Kristin Quah, Giselle Poss and Maria Bulanova nearly the entire day. Williamson was pleased with the freshman Rigney’s performance.
There will be five team games starting Saturday at 9:00 (CST).
