Vanderbilt Women’s Golf Set to Host Mason Rudolph Championship This Friday-Sunday

9/19/2005

The 29th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s golf team will battle several of the nation’s elite teams this weekend when it plays host to the Mason Rudolph Championship, Sept. 23-25 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin. The tournament will be played on the 6,217-yard Ironhorse Course.

Squads from the Southeastern Conference, Atlantic Coast Conference, Pac-10 and Big 12 will be competing in the field that boasts 12 teams ranked in Golfweek’s Top 30 preseason poll. Top-ranked UCLA and No. 2 Duke headline the list of competitors that includes six teams ranked in the top 10 of the magazine’s poll.

“I look forward to seeing our team play well on our home course,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Martha Richards Freitag said. “We look to be competitive and be in the mix alongside an incredible group of highly ranked teams.”

Tulane also will be represented in the field. The Green Wave will be playing in its first tournament since the effects of Hurricane Katrina forced the team to temporarily relocate to SMU.

“We’re excited to have Tulane participating this weekend,” Freitag said. “We’ll be rolling out the red carpet to make sure they have a good week.”

The Commodores opened the 2005-06 season two weeks ago by taking third place at the Cougar Classic hosted by the College of Charleston. Sophomore Liebelei Lawrence and freshman Jacqui Concolino tied for ninth place.

Earlier this month Golfweek Magazine named junior Chris Brady a Second Team All-American while listing Concolino and fellow freshman Amber Lundskog as “Freshmen to Watch.”
