Vanderbilt Women Picked Fourth in Pre-Season Coaches’ Poll 9/1/2005 After a season plagued with injuries that ended with a sixth place finish in the 2004 Southeastern Conference Championships, the Vanderbilt women’s cross country team was picked fourth in the 2005 SEC pre-season coaches’ poll. If the Commodores are able to seal a place in the top four, it will be the team’s highest finish in the program’s history. “It would be a great achievement,” VU Head Coach Jim Spivey said. “But the health of the team will determine the season outcome.” The Commodores have 15 of the team’s previous 20 letter-winners returning for the 2005 season, including junior Ashleigh Wetzel who placed fifth in the 2004 SEC Championship. The University of Tennessee was picked to win the SEC title for the third consecutive year with six first place votes and 115 points, followed closely by Arkansas with 113 points and Georgia with 101 points. On the men’s side, Arkansas dominated the preseason poll with ten first place votes. A first place finish would earn the Razorbacks their thirty-second straight conference title.
