Vanderbilt to Honor 40th Anniversary of 1964-65 SEC Championship Squad
Vanderbilt’s first men’s basketball SEC Championship squad, the 1964-65 Commodores, will be honored at halftime of Saturday’s home contest with Ole Miss. Game time is set for 3 p.m. CT.
The 1964-65 Vanderbilt team, under the direction of Head Coach Roy Skinner, compiled a 24-4 overall record and 15-1 league mark while advancing to the Mideast Regional Final of the NCAA Tournament.
Coach Skinner, along with assistant coach Don Knodel, all the players and team managers and Mrs. Florine Worden, wife of long-time Athletic Trainer Joe Worden, are scheduled to attend.
Below are highlights from the 1964-65 season: ? Finished with a 24-4 overall record, the most wins in a single season until the 1992-93 Commodores finished 28-6. ? Ended with a 15-1 mark in SEC play, tied for most SEC wins in school history with the 1973-74 team, Vanderbilt’s other SEC Championship squad. ? Advanced to the NCAA Tournament Mideast Regional Final after outlasting DePaul, 83-78, in overtime in the semifinals. The Commodores then lost an 87-85 heartbreaker to Michigan. ? Ranked as high as third nationally in Associated Press Poll (Dec. 8, 1964). ? Clyde Lee averaged 22.5 points per game and was named Second Team All-American by the Associated Press. ? Bob “Snake” Grace (Coaches, AP Second Team, UPI Third Team), Clyde Lee (AP, UPI and Coaches First Team) and John Ed Miller (Coaches, UPI First Team, AP Second Team) each earned All-SEC accolades. ? Vanderbilt Head Coach Roy Skinner was named the SEC Coach of the Year.
