Vanderbilt Takes On No. 20 Cincinnati in Queen City

Vanderbilt faces its first ranked opponent of the season when it travels to the Queen City to battle No. 20 Cincinnati Thursday. The game tips at 7 p.m. CT and will be televised by Fox Sports Net.

The Commodores (4-3) split a pair of games last week, defeating Austin Peay, 74-58, in Nashville before dropping a 75-65 decision to Oregon in Portland. The Commodores will play their first true road game of the season after four home games and three neutral-site contests. Vanderbilt was 4-8 away from home last year with victories over Belmont, TCU, Alabama and Ole Miss.

Vanderbilt continues to look for its first win away from Memorial Gymnasium this season. Outscoring their opponents by 18 points a game at home, the Commodores are shooting 50.2 percent from the field and 49.0 percent from beyond the arc. However, away from home, Vanderbilt has been outscored by 14.3 points an outing, while connecting on 41.8 percent from the field and 29.7 percent from behind the three-point line.

The Bearcats (4-0) are coming off a 76-55 win at Dayton on Saturday. Cincinnati has five scorers averaging in double-figures, led by junior guard Jihad Muhammad’s 14.3 points. Senior forward Jason Maxiell, a three-time John Wooden Award candidate, averages 13.8  points and 9.3 rebounds. Junior forward Eric Hicks averages a double-double with 13.3 points and 10.3 rebounds.

Vanderbilt and Cincinnati have met only four times on the hardwood and just once in the past 33 seasons. The Commodores won the last meeting in the series, an 86-83 decision in the Sugar Bowl Tournament on Dec. 29, 1970.
