Vanderbilt’s Gordon Named Pensacola Amateur Athlete of the Year

Vanderbilt freshman Alex Gordon has been named the Pensacola (Fla.) Amateur Athlete of the Year by the Pensacola Sports Association.

Gordon will receive the award in his hometown, Monday, April 11 at the association’s annual banquet.

The 5-11, 165-pound point guard averaged 6.0 points and hit 40 3-pointers during the 2004-05 Commodores’ season that concluded in the quarterfinal round of the Postseason National Invitation Tournament.  Gordon ranked among the top freshmen in the Southeastern Conference in free throw percentage (sixth — .781), 3-point shooting percentage (seventh — .345) and assists (10th — 1.21 per game).

Gordon tallied a career-high 30-points, shooting 8-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-7 3-pointers in a 67-62 victory over Tennessee on Feb. 2.

At Pensacola High School, Gordon was named the 2004 4A Florida Player of the Year in basketball and football by the Pensacola News Journal. He helped guide the Tigers to three district titles and the 2004 Florida state semifinals in basketball, averaging 27.3 points, 8.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds as a senior.  As a quarterback, Gordon threw for 3,00 yards and 26 touchdowns and ran for nearly 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior.
