Vanderbilt PUMA Classic — Day One Nashville, Tenn. — Junior forward John Krause scored two goals, including the game-tying goal at the 74:09 mark to lead Vanderbilt to a 3-3 tie with Northwestern University in the second game of the Vanderbilt PUMA Classic. Memphis defeated Eastern Illinois, 3-2, in double overtime to win the first contest of the day. Game One: Memphis 3, Eastern Illinois 2, 2OT – Box Score Game Two: Vanderbilt 3, Northwestern 3, 2OT – Box Score Vanderbilt scored first when Krause hit a hard shot down the middle from 10-yards out on a pass by freshman Joe Germanese at the 15:15 mark. Northwestern tied the game almost two minutes later when David Roth and Daniel Chille teamed up for a goal on a first time strike from six yards out. The Wildcats took its first lead of the game 20 seconds later when Chille collected a steal and passed it to Will Nicholas who scored from 18-yards up the middle of the field. “We played well enough to win, but poorly enough to lose,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim McClements said. “We made enough mistakes that cost us the opportunity to win the game.” Northwestern led 2-1 at halftime. Sophomore Curt Hinds tied the game at 2-2 just 11 minutes into the second half when his only shot of the season scampered out of a pack of Commodores just outside the box from 8-yards. Northwestern regained the lead at the 62:10 mark, 3-2, when Gerardo Alvarez scored when Chille’s shot attempt was deflected by a Commodore. Krause scored his second goal of the game, fifth of the season, when he took a rebound off his own miss to the left side of the net from eight-yards out. Northwestern goalkeeper Brian Heckenbach made a diving save to the right side with 10 minutes remaining off a Germanese attempt and then made a jumping save on a Josh Medcalf header with just under five minutes remaining in regulation. Northwestern totaled two shots in the first overtime period, but VU’s Kenny Schoeni made a couple of great saves to send the game into the second overtime. Vanderbilt got two shots off in the second overtime, while the Wildcats numbered one shot. Schoeni played the entire game in goal for the Commodores totaling four saves, including one in each period. Justin Pines began the game in goal for Northwestern and collected two saves, but Heckenbach began the second period and ended the game with four saves. Vanderbilt outshot Northwestern 17-14, led by Krause with seven and Germanese with four. “On the positive side, the team battled and if they continue to play that hard and eliminate the mistakes, we’ll cause problems for some teams down the road,” McClements added. The Vanderbilt PUMA Classic concludes Sunday when Northwestern (4-1-1) plays Eastern Illinois (2-2) at Noon and Vanderbilt (1-3-1 plays Memphis (3-1) at 2 pm at the Vanderbilt Soccer Stadium. In the first game of the day, Marcus McCarty hit a 12-yard shot off a Justin Dyer throw in at the 101:37 mark to give Memphis a 3-2 victory over Eastern Illinois in double overtime. |
