Vanderbilt’s Department of Athletics is partnering with the Nashville Coaching Coalition to host an innovative one-day seminar for high school and college athletic coaches looking to improve their ability to effectively mentor their players and lead healthy programs. “The Coach Forum” will be held from 8:30am — 4:00pm on July 21st at the Vanderbilt Student Life Center.
“The Nashville Coaching Coalition is a new organization with a noble and valuable mission to prepare athletic coaches be better leaders in their programs and their communities,” said Vanderbilt Director of Athletics David Williams. “Many of the topics to be discussed are matters of great importance in today’s sports world that do not often get addressed and we are enthused and proud to play a role in the first event. An impressive array of athletics experts will be sharing their knowledge and experience.”
The Coach Forum will offer coaches access to resources that will grow their capacity to positively influence the players and communities they lead.
The list of presenters includes Joe Ehrmann, former NFL player and author, Josh Davis, three-time Olympic gold medal winning swimmer, Valorie Condos Field, six-time national champion head coach for UCLA gymnastics, Shan Foster, former Vanderbilt basketball star, Ingle Martin, local high school football coach, Wendy Borlabi, sports psychologist for the Chicago Bulls, Vanderbilt’s national women’s tennis national champion coach Geoff McDonald along with others who represent a diverse range of individuals. Candice Lee, Vanderbilt Deputy Athletic Director, former Tennessee Titan Dave Ball and WSMV’s Rudy Kalis will also have roles in the event.
Forum presenters will cover issues including mental health in athletics, eating disorders in athletics, ending power based violence, work-life balance for coaches, self-awareness, building team trust, relationship centered coaching, authentic leadership, intentional character development and a session by noted Vanderbilt Medical Center concussion expert Dr. Allen Sills on concussion and injury awareness.
“Coaches have a powerful and challenging position,” says Scott Hearon, Executive Director of the Nashville Coaching Coalition. “Their influence is as influential as any in a player’s life and the culture of a community, but there seem to be very few options for coaches to grow their skill sets as mentors and leaders beyond the X’s and 0’s of the game. The Coach Forum is a one-of-a-kind event that offers resources to coaches that are looking to be more effective in the ways they lead their players as athletes and as people.”
Coaches and athletic administrators that are interested in attending this important event can register online at thecoachforum.com. Tickets are $45 and include full access to the event, lunch, parking, breakout sessions, an event packet, and access to refreshments throughout the day.
