Vanderbilt-Northeastern Quotes
January 4, 2014
Nashville, Tenn.
Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings
Opening Comments:
“Our guys did a good job during the week in preparation for [Northeastern’s] defense. They play a zone that gives people a lot of trouble. I thought we were prepared and did a good job. We shot the ball well and our defense played solidly. We certainly haven’t had a game like this yet this season. [Northeastern is] a good team. They’ve lost a lot of close games.”
On Vanderbilt’s Defense:
“Aside from our defense in the first six minutes of the second half, we played well. When you have 21 assists and 12 turnovers, a lot of things have gone right. We shared the ball and our point guards gave us good play. When we get good guard play, we’re effective on offense.”
On Vanderbilt’s Next Opponent, Alabama:
“I haven’t seen a possession of Alabama yet, so that’s something I’ll start on tonight. [Trevor] Releford must be playing at a high level. Andy [Kennedy’s] teams always play at a high level.”
On Vanderbilt’s Growth:
“At halftime, we talked about growth. It’s easy to take your foot off the pedal, but we didn’t. These guys should feel good about themselves.”
Vanderbilt forward Rod Odom
On the sizzling shooting performance of Vanderbilt as a team:
“We shot pretty well in the early part of the season and the preseason as well. We had some practices where we felt like guys couldn’t miss, so we knew it was going to click for us at one point or another.”
On the weakness of Northeastern’s zone that allowed Vanderbilt to shoot so well tonight:
“We knew that they had a very strong zone and it bothered a lot of people, so we tried to take a different approach. We got the ball down low and then out to the corners and that gave us an opportunity to get it across the court and kick it out to shooters and such.”
On the team’s confidence going into SEC play:
“We definitely feel really good, we played a tough team and they played a lot of teams tough. We know they gave a lot of other teams trouble and they overcame some big deficits. It definitely gives us some momentum going forward.”
On where the team has gotten better in the preseason:
“Taking care of the ball and defending. We knew our turnovers were a struggle early in the game and we did everything we could to get it cleaned up.”
