Vanderbilt Men’s Soccer Edges Past No. 25 Memphis, 4-3

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – John Krause’s goal at the 81:07 mark lifted Vanderbilt to a 4-3 win over No. 25 Memphis Saturday night at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
The match was a back and forth affair as the Commodores jumped out to a 2-0 lead only to see the Tigers tie it at 2-2 at the 55-minute mark. The teams exchanged goals within a minute of each other, before Krause knocked in his eighth goal and fourth game winning shot of the season.
“We played really well tonight,” said head coach Tim McClements. “I thought we played some of our best soccer at times, and we got sloppy at some points too. Memphis played a great game as well, yet we kept our composure and came away with the win. We told the guys before the game that you have to battle for 90 minutes and it was nice to see them do that and come out on top.”
Vanderbilt improves to 4-3 on the year and has beaten two Top 25 teams in the last three games. Memphis lost its third straight to drop to 4-3 on the year.
VU will be back in action at home on Friday, Sept. 30 against Denver at 7 p.m.
Patrick Murray took an assist from Joe Germanese and shot a frozen rope from 10 yards out to give the Commodores the early 1-0 lead at the 22-minute mark. Germanese then opened the second half scoring barrage in the 48th minute off of assists by Murray and Tim Lonergan.
Memphis struck back quickly with two goals by Jared Britcher (52:51) and Marcus McCarty (55:22) to tie the game at 2-2.
Germanese scored his second goal of the game to give Vanderbilt a 3-2 advantage at the 78:34 minute mark, but the lead was short lived as Cormac McArdle scored just 48 seconds later to tie the game.
Krause then scored two minutes later, taking an assist from Germanese and scoring on a rebounded saved shot to win the game.
