Vanderbilt will face Appalachian State for the championship of the 2006 San Juan Shootout at the Mario Morales Coliseum, Thursday, Dec. 21 at 3 p.m. CT.

Vanderbilt (8-3) enters the final round having won seven consecutive games after outlasting in-state foe Tennessee Tech, 75-62, on Wednesday. Ted Skuchas scored a career-high 16 points to go along with six rebounds and three blocked shots. Alex Gordon tied a season-high with 15 points. Dan Cage (13), Derrick Byars (12) and Shan Foster (10) also reached double figures.

The Commodores will be looking to win their first regular-season tournament crown since claiming the 1987 Hawaiian Airlines Silversword Invitational in Wailuku, Hawaii.

Appalachian State (9-3) has been impressive in wins over Virginia (80-69) and Central Florida (75-64) in San Juan. Nate Cranford tallied 18 points thanks to six 3-pointers in the Mountaineers’ second-round win against Central Florida. The Mountaineers have won four consecutive games.

Vanderbilt has won both previous meetings with Appalachian State. The Commodores topped the Mountaineers 63-48 on Dec. 22, 2003 and 68-51 on Dec. 22, 2004. Both games were played at Vanderbilt’s Memorial Gymnasium.
