HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. – The Vanderbilt women’s golf team moved up one spot on the team leaderboard during Round 2 of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate, as the Commodores carded 4-under 284 to end the day in fifth place.
The Commodores head into Sunday’s final round with a two-day score of 7-under 569. The Dores are just one stroke behind New Mexico for fourth place and six strokes behind second-place California. Host Denver goes into the final round of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in first place at 26-under 550.
“I thought we played a little better today but just didn’t capitalize on the par 5 holes,” said Vanderbilt women’s golf coach Greg Allen. “Denver is doing what you’re supposed to do on your home golf course. They have created some separation, but this is team golf and I’ve seen some crazy things happen in the final round. We obviously need some help, but we have a team that believes we’re capable of a really low round. We’ll go out tomorrow and see what we can do.”
A total of three Vanderbilt women’s golfers ended Round 2 inside the top 20 on the player leaderboard. Freshman Ava Merrill sits in a tie for ninth place going into Sunday’s finale after carding 1-under 284 in the second round. Merrill has a two-day score of 4-under 140.
Sophomore Tillie Claggett moved into the top 15 during the second round. She carded 2-under 70 to end the day in a tie for 15th with a score of 2-under 142. Senior Virginie Ding shot even par 72 in Round 2 and is tied for 19th. Sophomore Lynn Lim is just outside the top 20 heading into the tournament’s final round, she is tied for 23rd after carding 1-under 71 in the second round.
