Vanderbilt Golfers in Second Place Tie in Carolina 10/7/2005 CHAPEL Hill, N.C. – Vanderbilt’s women’s golf team turned in a solid opening round performance and is in a three-way tie for second at the Lady Tarheel Invitational Friday. The Commodores shot 12-over par 300 as a team, six shots behind first place Duke, and knotted with Virginia and Auburn. Chris Brady had Vanderbilt’s best day, turning in an even par 72 to trail Anna Grzebien of Duke and Leah Wigger of Virginia, who carded 70’s. Other Commodore results included Kristen Svicarovich at 75, Amber Lundskog shooting 76 and Jacqui Concolino and Liebelei Lawrence with a pair of 77’s. “I was very proud of the toughness and fight we showed all day long,” Coach Martha Richards Freitag said. “It rained off and on all day, some of the fairways were nearly casual water. It took nearly six and a half hours to play but it was an especially good to see us overcome conditions that caused many good teams a lot of problems.” The tournament used a shotgun start with Brady beginning on number 14. She had a bogey and a birdie before making the turn, where she notched three birdies on the front side’s first six holes. She ran into bogeys on 7, 8 and 11 to drop back to even par. She enters the second round of play tied for seventh. Svicarovich and Lawrence each had steady days. Svicarovich had five bogeys against two birdies while Lawrence had three bogeys and a double-bogey to go with 14 pars. Once again, Vanderbilt received solid play from freshmen Concolino and Lundskog. Concolino double-bogeyed her second hole, the par 5 13th, and then settled down to bogey just three more holes. Lundskog doubled the par 5 third hole but added a trio of birdies on her card. The tournament is being played over the 6,285 yard UNC Finley Golf Course. Eighteen teams are competing. Play continues Saturday and Sunday with live scoring and complete results on golfstat.com |
