Vanderbilt Head Coach Melanie Balcomb
On the lineup:
“I was just trying to get everybody in the game. For the first game I promised everybody they would play and I just wanted to get their feet wet. We’ve had some people hurt and who haven’t played in a long time. Others have been waiting to put a college uniform on since sixth grade. Today we just wanted to get the game out of the way. You could see that today, they were just out there playing by themselves. We didn’t get five kids playing well together and that’s going to happen when you look at different lineups and are playing a variety of people.”
On playing the true freshmen:
“I played them. If they weren’t ready I wouldn’t have played them.”
On if she was calling plays:
“No, I just let them go out and play. We don’t have many plays so we were just working on our main motion offense and our defenses. We still have to put a lot of things in.”
On how the freshmen performed:
“They have been able to pick things up real quickly. I only have to tell them things one time and they hit it. There is a lot to learn and they are not over whelmed.”
Senior Guard Jence Rhoads
On the game:
“I was pretty happy with it. It was a good place to start. We have a lot of improvements to make. I think offensively we did a lot better in the second half than we did in the first half.”
On the key to the second half:
“We were able to transition a little bit more. Everyone was able to convert in transition and that’s what coach was looking for.”
On playing a talented team in an exhibition game:
“They are definitely a talented team and are going to have success this year. I think they gave us a good test.”
Freshman guard Christina Foggie
On getting to play a talented team in an exhibition game:
“I think it was definitely a good challenge for us. They have some quick guards. It was good to go up against a team like them because they gave us a challenge.”
On finding out she was starting:
“I actually found out earlier today. I thought it was great to get an opportunity to play in my first college game. It was exciting. It was a good experience and something I can learn from in the future.”
