NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team saw its first game action of the fall Friday, defeating NAIA National Champion Union University, 69-48, in exhibition action at Memorial Gymnasium.
Junior Jence Rhoads shared the team lead for points with freshman Tiffany Clarke. Rhoads scored 15 points in 35 minutes to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Clarke’s 15 points came on 6-of-9 shooting and were accompanied by nine boards.
In all, nine of the 11 active Commodores scored in the contest. Junior Hannah Tuomi and freshman Elan Brown each poured in eight points.
Led by junior guard Kayla Hudson’s 19 points, Union led throughout much of the first half. The Commodores took their first lead of the game with 12 minutes remaining on a Tuomi layup. The game featured seven ties, with the last won coming at 41-41 before the Commodores closed with a 28-7 run.
Vanderbilt will have eight days before playing their only other exhibition game of the 2009 preseason. Drury visits Memorial Gym on Saturday, Nov. 7, for a 2 p.m. CT tip.
