Vanderbilt Bowlers Third in Delaware 11/20/2005 MILLSBORO, DE – Vanderbilt’s bowling team had its best finish to date Sunday by placing third in the 19-team Eastern Shore Hawk Classic. The Commodores went 8-2 over the two days of competition to finish behind Farleigh Dickinson, third in last year’s NCAA Tournament, and New Jersey City College. Freshman Tara Kane placed sixth individually in a field of over 100 for Vanderbilt, which improved its record to 19-14. Vanderbilt began the day in fourth place and faced Farleigh Dickinson in the first Baker Game, in which each of the five team members alternate shots. It was probably the highlight of the season to date for the youthful Commodore team, which for the first time had the services of its fifth freshman, Mandy Keily. Vanderbilt scorched the tricky sport shot lanes with an impressive 684 three game total to easily to the eventual tourney champs. “We did an outstanding job in that first Baker Game,” said Coach John Williamson, “and then we had four more Baker games in which I think we lost our edge. Even though we won three of the four, I believe we became complacent to simply win the game instead of pile up as many pins as possible. The result was that we were edged out of second place by a mere six pins.” The Commodores still managed to have the best pin total of the day and Williamson felt Keily gave the Commodores a big boost, especially in the Farleigh Dickinson game. Keily, a transfer from Colorado State which does not sponsor bowling, had won some modest amounts of prize money as an amateur — typical for the sport — when she did not think she would ever be involved in NCAA competition. After she transferred to Vanderbilt, the NCAA had her sit out the early competition. She is in her first year of eligibility, giving Vanderbilt an all-freshman look today. Vanderbilt’s fall schedule is now complete and the spring portion begins January 20 at Central Missouri’s Ozark Invitational. Sunday’s Baker Game action: Defeated Farleigh Dickinson, 684-539 |
