Vanderbilt Athletics Introduces Walk-Through Weapons Detection Technology at Select Venues

Fan-friendly system to start with men’s and women’s basketball games at Memorial Gymnasium

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt Athletics will begin implementing walk-through weapons detection technology at select athletic facilities this spring, starting with men’s and women’s basketball games at Memorial Gymnasium and baseball games at Hawkins Field.

The addition of OpenGate walk-through metal detectors is part of Vanderbilt’s ongoing commitment to fan safety and is being implemented in partnership with and with the support of Vanderbilt University Public Safety. The technology enhances existing security measures while also improving the game day experience through faster, more efficient venue entry.

The system is designed to be extremely fan-friendly, allowing guests to simply walk through without stopping, removing items from pockets, lifting arms, or separating personal belongings.

Vanderbilt’s clear bag policy will remain in effect. Fans may walk through the detectors with their clear bags.

“Our goal is to provide a safe and welcoming environment while making entry into our venues as seamless as possible,” said Deputy Athletic Director Derek Grice. “This technology allows us to add an important layer of security without creating unnecessary friction for our fans.”

The walk-through detectors will be used for the remainder of the basketball season and for all baseball games at Hawkins Field this spring. Vanderbilt plans to expand the use of this technology to additional athletic venues and events moving forward.

The OpenGate system has been successfully used at major sporting and entertainment venues and was utilized during Vanderbilt’s bowl game last season. Additional information will be shared through “Know Before You Go” emails, venue signage, and updates on vucommodores.com.
