8/31/2006

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt Men’s Cross Country team will start the 2006 season this Friday at the Belmont Opener in Percy Warner Park at 6 pm.

Austin Weaver will make his debut with the Commodores after transferring from Notre Dame this summer. Weaver holds the record for cross country state titles in Tennessee, where he was an eight-time track and field/cross country letterwinner at Franklin Road Academy from 1999-2002.

Freshman Thomas Davis will also make his Commodore debut on Friday. Davis was the 2006 Kentucky State Champion in the 1600, finishing with a blazing time of 4:18.74.

Last year’s Commodore leader, junior Austin Williamson, took tenth place at the Belmont Opener in 2005 with a 15:19 mark and is expected to be a pack leader again this season.

“Austin [Williamson] is back and he’s in as good as or better shape than he was last season,” VU Head Coach Steve Keith said.

The race will begin at 6 pm at the Vaughn’s Gap course at Percy Warner Park in Bellevue, Tenn.
