NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt guard Tyler Tanner was named a First Team All-SEC selection by the conference’s head coaches, the league announced Monday. The sophomore and Brentwood native was also named to the SEC All-Defensive Team.
Tanner finished the 18-game SEC slate averaging 21.5 points per game with 5.5 assists and 2.3 steals. He is the first SEC player in at least 30 years to average better than 21/5.5/2 in conference action. He is just the third high-major player to hit those marks in league play over the past 30 years, joining consensus All-Americans Jay Williams (Duke) and Jason Terry (Arizona).
He is the first Vanderbilt player to earn First Team All-SEC recognition since Liam Robbins in 2023 and the 61st first team selection all-time for the Commodores. Tanner finished the regular season averaging 19.2 points, 5.2 assists and 2.5 steals per game. He is the only player in the country to average better that 19 points, five assists and two steals this season.
Tanner is just the fifth Commodore to earn All-Defensive honors, joining Robbins (2023), Luke Kornet (2016, 17), Damian Jones (2015) and Jeffery Taylor (2010, 11, 12). With 76 steals on the season, Tanner is one steal away from tying the Vanderbilt single season record set by James Strong in 1998-99.
The sophomore’s 76 swipes lead all high-major players and rank eighth overall nationally. He’s the only player in the country to finish the regular season with more than 585 points and 75 steals.
Tanner and the Dores will continue their season in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals on Friday.
