Melanie Balcomb, Vanderbilt Head Coach
On the offense’s slow start:
“We had every open look we needed. I think we had a little pregame jitters on offense. I thought we continued to play good defense, and eventually we hit our shots.”
On playing almost everyone in the game:
“That’s what you want in the first game. You want to break it open enough… and we were able to do that after the first half. We have to continue to play defense. At halftime, we had 19 points just off our defense. “
Did you call that timeout when TAMU-CC caught up to rally the troops?
“Yeah, we looked tired. We just looked like we were tired. Tina (Christina Wirth) had gone up and down. No one went to the free-throw line in the first half. So, the game was not stopping, and I had played Tina a lot of minutes especially. We just looked tired. I think we just needed to get wind.”
What’d you think of freshman Tia Gibbs’ first game?
“Tia can shoot it with the best of them. One of the things that she’s working on is figuring out our defense and our matchup schemes, but offensively she’s always ready to shoot. We know what we’re going to get from her. She’s very steady on offense.”
Talk about the how much the new floor helps:
“We’ve had a lot of lower extremity injuries, stress fractures. This should help us down the stretch in January, February and March.”
Talk about five games in 10 days:
“I think our exam schedule has changed, and that’s made things a little more difficult. They keep adding games.”
