Tales from Team Camp Part One
Part two of VUCommodores.com’s behind the scenes look at the Vanderbilt men’s and women’s cross country team camp takes a look at the relay race both teams did during their team camp at Natchez Trace State Park.
With the squads broken down into teams, the relay consisted of eight portions:
1. Canoe across the lake
2. Swim across the lake
3. Unknot your team’s shoes
4. Eat a whole onion
5. Frog jump up the hill
6. Solve riddles
7. Push-ups
8. Run with water
Two members of each team had to canoe across the lake before another two members had two swim across. Following that, each team had to unknot all of their shoes, which had been tied together by the coaching staff.
After untying their shoes and putting them on, each team had to consume an entire onion, with each team member taking at least one bite.
Then they had to each frog jump up the hill near camp, one at a time, before solving riddles. In addition to the riddles, the runners had to try and match the each member of the coaching staff to the mascot of their alma mater. Thankfully, no one missed head coach Steve Keith, who is a 1981 Vanderbilt graduate.
After doing five push-ups for each wrong answer, one member of the team had to run a loop around the camp (about a quarter-mile) while holding water in their mouth.
Take a look at the action:
Tomorrow, we bring you the highlight of team camp… s’mores!
