HARAHAN, La. — The No. 2-seeded Commodores swept 11-seed Tulane on Day 1 of the Conference USA Bowling Championship, earning a bye to Friday’s quarterfinal round.
“I thought it was a good start to the postseason,” head coach John Williamson said. “I felt like we were able to maintain a high level of execution. I thought the Baker set was one of our most complete sets all year. I felt like Tulane played well, but we were able to answer the runs they provided, and ultimately, we were able to make some really important shots that will help us as we advance through this tournament.”
The Commodores earned a come-from-behind win in the traditional game, 977-953. Tulane struck nine times in the first two frames, but Vanderbilt fought to stay in the match and would eventually strike six times in a row to take the lead midway through the game. Katelyn Abigania and Victoria Varano led the way with respective scores of, 213 and 208.
Vandy kept its momentum rolling in the Baker match, shooting 1,115 to sweep the Green Wave. The Commodores were consistent from start to finish, compiling scores of 213, 224, 205, 213 and 255.
On Friday, Vanderbilt will face the winner of Match 8 between No. 3 Arkansas State and either No. 6 Wichita State or No. 7 Youngstown State at 9 a.m.
