Svicarovich Leads Vandy Golf Rally 9-22-04

9/22/2004

Vanderbilt’s women’s golf team enjoyed its best day at the NCAA Fall Preview Tournament by 10 strokes, shooting a combined nine-over par to finish in a tie for 15th with Arizona.  Twenty-one of the nation’s best teams competed in Sunriver, Oregon.

Sophomore Kristen Svicarovich had a career best one-under par 70, leaping into the top 15 individuals in the process at three-over par for the tournament.  The leaders were still on the course when Vanderbilt finished; complete results can be found on golfstat.com  Duke, Washington and Oklahoma State were locked in a battle for the team title.

While Svicarovich was putting up three birdies against just two bogeys in her home state, the Commodores also got tournament best efforts from Chris Brady (73) and freshman Devon Unkeless (76).  Newcomer Liebelei Lawrence had an excellent tournament, shooting two-over 74 today to finish the 54 holes nine-over par.  Freshman Julie Bartholomew shot a non-scoring 84 to complete the Vanderbilt team.

Commodore Coach Martha Richards Freitag was pleased with Wednesday’s performance.

“I thought Kristen had a great tournament, especially considering she was sick with strep throat the entire tournament,” Freitag said.

“I was impressed with our team’s composure and fight and we made a nice move today,” Freitag continued.  “I’m very pleased with that.  Liebelei had a solid tournament and Chris came through for us today.”

Day Two

Freshman Liebelei Lawrence fired a two-over par 73 to lead the Vanderbilt women’s golf team in the second day of the NCAA Fall Preview at Sunriver, Oregon.

Although the Commodores improved three shots from their opening round, they remain in 19th position, 41 strokes over par.  Complete team and individual scoring can be found on golfstat.com as the leaders were still on the course.

Lawrence, who opened her college career with a 75 yesterday, had just three bogeys and a birdie straying from 14 steady pars.  She made today’s turn at one-over par and stands six-over after 36 holes.

Sophomore Kristen Svicarovich added a 74 Tuesday after her opening 72 to lead Vanderbilt after two days play.  The Oregon product played her final 10 holes even par Tuesday.

Chris Brady added a 77 after going five over par on the back nine.

Freshmen Devon Unkeless and Julie Bartholomew shot 82 and 79, respectively, to complete the Vanderbilt scoring.

The tournament concludes with 18 holes Wednesday.

Day One

Vanderbilt’s women’s golf team finds itself in 19th place after Monday’s first round of the 54 hole NCAA Preview Tournament being played in Sunriver, Oregon.

The tournament has 21 teams that project to be national contenders this year.  Duke, last year’s NCAA runner-up, led after the first day with a one-under par 283 total.  Vanderbilt, using three freshmen making their collegiate debuts, shot 306, 22-over par.

Commodore sophomore Kristen Svicarovich, an Oregon native playing in her home state, led her team with a one-over par 72.   Kristen opened her day with bogeys on the first two holes, only to play the next (13) holes three under.  She had back-to-back birdies on holes 6 and 7.

Svicarovich is in 16th place individually.  Duke’s Brittany Lang led all individuals with a seven-under par 64.  Karin Sjodin was next at 67.

Freshman Liebelei Lawrence had a steady debut, shooting 74.  The Luxembourg native opened with a two-over 37 on the front side and came back with another two-over backside effort.

Chris Brady, an All-SEC performer last year as a freshman, made the turn at one-under but suffered a quadruple bogey 9 on No. 10.  That began a slide that ended the day with a seven-over par 78.

Freshmen Devon Unkeless and Julie Bartholomew had some early jitters.  Bartholomew found herself 10 over-par after 13 holes but played the last five holes even.  Unkeless had the opposite fortune, making the turn at three-over before struggling in at plus-12.

Monday’s round was delayed 45 minutes due to frost, which could slow play again.  The tournament is being carried with live scoring on golfstat.com.
