Vanderbilt senior Marina Alex and junior Lauren Stratton are each finished with round one at the U.S. Amateur at the Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, R.I., and both have very good chances of advancing to match play competition.
Stratton fired a one-under par, 70, and Alex came in at even-par, 71, on Monday. Alex and Stratton have one more round of stroke play before match play begins on Wednesday.
The top 64 players after the two days of stroke play advance to match play competition. Stratton, from Spring Hill, Tenn., is in a tie for sixth place after her round on Monday after posting an eagle, three birdies, and four bogeys. The junior’s eagle came on the par-four, 380-yard 15th hole when she holed her second shot from the fairway.
Alex posted her even-par round early in the day at the Rhode Island Country Club and is in a tie for 14th. The senior from Wayne, N.J., had two birdies, two bogeys, and a slew of pars in her first round.
Stratton tees off at 7 a.m. EST off of the 10 tee on Tuesday, while Alex goes off of number one at 2:16 p.m. EST.
Jihee Kim of Korea leads all golfers after shooting a five-under par, 66. Xi Yu Lin of China and Mariel Galdiano of Pearl City, Hawaii are two strokes back of Kim at three-under.
