Storm Flyer Classic Complete

Vanderbilt bowled a 299 Baker game Sunday

LOCKPORT, Ill. – The Commodores ended their run at the Storm Flyer Classic with a sixth-place finish Sunday at Strike & Spare II in Lockport, Illinois.

“Winning in sports can be about timing as much as anything else,” head coach John Williamson said. “We had bad timing with our opponents and bad timing of mistakes in our matches. We didn’t take care of the little things that would ultimately allow us success.  We’ve got a short week to regroup and another tough weekend coming up. We need to reset quickly, because a lot of these teams will be in Arkansas in four days.”

In the first match of the day, Vanderbilt traded wins with Nebraska and forced the Huskers to seven games but ultimately fell, 4-3.

Vandy made quick work of Sam Houston, notching a 4-1 win in Round 2. The victory was highlighted by a score of 299 in Game 5 from graduate student Isabel Allen, junior Alyssa Ballard, freshman Saphyre Nofuente, junior Victoria Varano and freshman Sydney Bohn.

Vanderbilt and Youngstown State’s final match was a back-and-forth affair that resulted in a tie after seven games, forcing a tiebreaker that the Penguins won.

Bohn was Vandy’s top finisher on the individual leaderboard Saturday, placing 30th out of more than 130 bowlers. Nofuente came off the bench in Game 3 on Day 2 and compiled scores of 213, 275 and 289 to average 259 pins per game. Her scoring average was the highest of the tournament. Nofuente’s 289 pin game is the highest scoring game by a Commodore this season and is tied for seventh highest in program history.

The Dores are back in action Friday when they travel to Jonesboro, Arkansas, for the Mid-Winter Classic.
