NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt women’s golf sits in the middle of the pack after 18 holes at the Mason Rudolph Championship. The Commodores finished Friday’s opening round at 6-under par with the help of a 3-under 69 from Sara Im.
“I thought we played pretty solid today but just didn’t make many birdies coming down the stretch,” said head coach Greg Allen.
The loaded field has yet to see much separation, with two teams—Mississippi State and South Carolina—tied for first place at 12-under par. There is just a six-stroke difference between first place and ninth place Vanderbilt.
Im led the Dores with her bogey-free, 3-under round that included three birdies. Angelina Tolentino, Lynn Lim and Ava Merrill all notched a 1-under-par 71 to start the weekend. Tillie Claggett carded a 2-over 74.
“The golf course was so good, the greens were perfect but unfortunately we burned a lot of putts,” said Allen. “I thought we showed a lot of patience throughout the day when those putts didn’t go in.”
Vanderbilt also had five additional players compete as individuals. Macie Brown led the second group with a 3-under par round to sit tied for 12th place individually. Claire Henson carded an even-par round to begin her Commodore career. Jayden Jevnick also took her first shot for Vanderbilt on Friday, finishing with a 79. Meghan Meserole returned to the course with a 2-over 74. Charlene Chung ended with a 77.
“It’s nice to see us under par, but in this field, with these conditions, we need to get hot and stay hot,” said Allen. “The great thing is that we have two more days to do just that.”
Vanderbilt will tee off along with Northwestern and Arizona State at 8:30 a.m. CT to start the second round. The Commodores’ second grouping will tee off at 9:20 a.m. from the 10th tee.
