Shannon, Morelli Set Personal Bests
In First Outdoor Effort at Alabama Relays

Tuscaloosa, Ala.  – Personal bests by senior middle distance runner Caitlin Shannon and freshman thrower Deanna Morelli paced the Commodore women’s squad at the Alabama Relays last weekend.

Performing in cold, rainy conditions, Shannon used a personal best of 2:12.67 to finish fourth overall in the 800-meter run on Saturday afternoon. Shannon continued to show excellent form on Sunday, opening the Commodores’ 4×1500-meter relay foursome with a 4:42.6 leg. The unit, which included Shannon, freshman Amanda Scott, senior Alisa Cotter and senior Brittany Sizer, also finished fourth overall.

Morelli, coming off a solid indoor campaign, set personal records in two throwing events, the discus and hammer. Competing in the hammer for the first time ever against a field that included 2005 Southeastern Conference champion Beth Mallory of Alabama, Morelli unleashed a throw of 154’3″, good for seventh overall. The performance jumps Morelli into third place all-time among Commodore hammer throwers. The only throws by a Commodore were the 169’7″ effort by Vensherrie Campbell in 2002 and Kyshia Ewing’s 160’7″ toss in 2003.

Morelli also finished 10th in the discus with a career best of 135’03”, an effort good enough to enter the team’s all-time top ten performers in the event. Junior Kasi Foster also had her best discus effort since the 2004 season, throwing 128’10”.

Sophomore Val Kazmer also established a personal best, finishing fifth overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a 11:43.70 performance, six seconds faster than your previous best at the distance. She ranks second all-time on the team at the distance, behind only 2002 SEC champion Kylene Kownurko.  A pair of freshman teammates, Christine Brown and Sarah Scott, finished 10th and 11th, respectively, in the steeplechase.

The Alabama Relays served as the outdoor season opener for the Commodore women’s squad. About 20 members of the team will compete next weekend at the Raleigh Relays, on the campus of North Carolina State.
