NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt’s Marlen Sewell was named to the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Watch List on Thursday, making him a candidate for the award given to the individual who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. The announcement was made on Thursday by The Wuerffel Foundation.
Sewell, who hails from Birmingham, Alabama, is also the Commodores’ nominee for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
Off the field, Sewell took part in Vanderbilt’s MLK Day of Service trip to Atlanta at the start of the calendar year while he was one of the Commodores representatives on a visit to a veterans’ hospital prior to playing in the Birmingham Bowl in December. On campus, he helped distribute gifts to children in need at the SAAC Holiday Party earlier in the month, assisted in fundraising for the Dancing Dores Dance Marathon event that benefits the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital and has also visited sick children at the hospital on multiple occasions. Sewell has supported children with special needs as a volunteer as well at a Special Olympics Tennessee event last year.
After receiving his degree in medicine, health & society from Vanderbilt in December, Sewell is now pursuing a master of legal studies degree from the university. He has been named to the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll each of the last three years.
Last fall, the safety made 20 stops while appearing in all 13 games for the Dores highlighted by a season-best five tackles at No. 7 Missouri. Sewell recorded career-high figures with 25 total tackles on the season—which included one behind the line of scrimmage—and nine stops in first career start against Kentucky during the 2023 campaign.
Sewell and the Commodores will take on Charleston Southern in the season opener Aug. 30 at FirstBank Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. Vandy fans can click here for more information on season ticket, mini-plan and single-game ticket options for the 2025 campaign.
