Schrann's behind-the-back bucket

Jan. 31, 2012

LSU tried to clamp down on Christina Foggie, Vanderbilt’s leading scorer, and freshman guard Kady Schrann made them pay.

In the Commodores’ 81-72 win over the Tigers Sunday, Schrann put on a shooting display with a career-high 29 points and delivered the knockout punch by using what she called one of her “secret weapons.”

With less than two minutes left in the game, Schrann took her defender off the dribble at the top of the key, and then used a behind-the back dribble to gain separation before hitting a 15-foot jumper while getting fouled.

Even redshirt sophomore center Stephanie Holzer was amazed by the play.

“I think (Kady) just pulled that out,” Holzer told reporters. “I had not seen that (move). I have seen the shot-fake crossover in front. She went with it.

“She doesn’t over-think the game and that’s what great players do; they just take what’s given to them. She hit it and it was awesome.”

Schrann’s performance was the most points for a Vanderbilt freshman since Wendy Scholtens scored 30 in 1988.

Bumps and Bruises

How physical can it get in the post?

Just ask Holzer, who was on the vicious end of a double foul with LSU’s LaShondra Barrett in the first half of Sunday’s game.

“I went up to grab a rebound and tried to put it up and I kind of got clocked,” Holzer explained. “That’s where I got (the injury). I was hit in the face, so I shut my eyes and went up with (the ball).

“It wasn’t on purpose. It’s a factor of the game.”

Holzer ended up with scratches on her forehead and left cheek. She stayed in the game and made both free throws.

Vanderbilt photographer John Russell captured this incredible photo of the play.
