NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Shawn Ryan will join the Vanderbilt bowling coaching staff as an assistant coach in June, head coach Josie Barnes announced Thursday.
“Shawn Ryan will immediately make a positive impact on the growth of our players,” Barnes said. “Although this will be his first time coaching a collegiate team, he is a familiar face in the world of bowling, having been a ball rep on both women and men’s professional tours and coaching international teams. He has quite literally worked with the best in the world. I worked directly with Shawn during three of my professional titles and have experienced his expertise firsthand. His knowledge of the game and ability to work with a lot of styles of players will complete our coaching staff. I’m thrilled to be working alongside Shawn and Isabel.”
Ryan brings more than a decade of experience working in the professional bowling world as a ball representative, which is a similar role to a caddy in golf. Most recently, he served as the vice president for consumer marketing at BowlersMart and the technical advisor for the Singapore Bowling Federation.
Although his coaching role with the Commodores will be his first with collegiate bowling, Ryan’s coaching efforts helped lead Team Thailand to gold and bronze medals in the masters and team events, respectively, at the Southeast Asian Games.
In 2007, Ryan received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from UCF where he also served as captain of the men’s bowling team. As a student-athlete, he was a member of Junior Team USA and named BWAA Collegiate Bowler of the Year honorable mention in 2005.
