OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Vanderbilt senior point guard Jence Rhoads was selected as one of 30 women’s basketball candidates for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award on Wednesday.
The award focuses on classroom, character, community and competition, and is presented annually to an NCAA Division I student-athlete in nine sports. Shan Foster won the award in men’s basketball in 2008 and Christina Wirth was a finalist for the women’s basketball award in 2009.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 women’s finalists midway through the regular season. The final ballot will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
Rhoads is a preseason All-SEC selection by the coaches and media. The Slippery Rock, Pa., native is Vanderbilt’s top returning scorer after averaging 13.8 points per game last season. Vanderbilt opens exhibition play Thursday against Delta State (7 p.m.).
