Renslow sparks unbeaten Commodores

Oct. 31, 2014

North Brunswick, NJ–Vanderbilt was unbeaten on the opening day of the New Jersey Jamboree, winning all five of its team game matches. The Commodores rest in fourth place in total pin fall heading into another five games Saturday.

Coach John Williamson called the day “a total team effort”. Indeed, Vandy used its entire travel roster to accomplish the sweep. The leader on this day was the two-time All-American Robyn Renslow, who twice made critical strikes in the 10th frame to solidify victories.

The Commodores downed seventh rated Fairleigh Dickinson, the host school, in the second game of the day by a 995-973 margin when Renslow struck and her solid play put away pesky Adelphi in the fourth game by a mere 13 pins.

“It was very nice following Natalie (Goodman) and Giselle (Poss) most of the day,” Renslow said. “They were bowling well and giving me good reads and adjustments.”

Renslow thought the team was a bit tight in the opening game but saw an encouraging sign as the games wore on.

“I think we eventually began to relax and let things happen,” she said, “and that felt like a difference from past years when we could get tighter arm swings later in games.”

Renslow also credited excellent preparation leading up to the tournament. This work allowed for a higher strike percentage across the board.

Renslow’s 1,052 paced Vandy in five games with Goodman close behind at 1,042. Goodman’s 236 proved huge in the win over Delaware State while Renslow’s 246 against Coppin State was her best line.

In the finale against Delaware State, with the pattern on the right side of the lane breaking down, Williamson inserted all four of his left-handers – Amanda Fry, Katie Stark, Rebeca Reguero and Goodman. Fry and Stark came in the eighth frame and gave a spark; Fry tripled in the closing frames and Reguero doubled to make a tight match look more comfortable than it was.

Sam Houston State leads the pack with 5,107 pins, followed closely by Stephen F. Austin and FDU, 14 pins ahead of the Commodores.Arkansas State is fifth and was also 5-0 on the day.

Bowling resumes Saturday morning with updates on social media.
