Sam Darmanie sets program standard in the 3,000-meter steeplechase

RALEIGH, N.C. — Members of the Vanderbilt men’s cross country team opened the Commodores’ participation at Raleigh Relays with flare, with both a school record being set and another record book entry secured on the night.

Sam Darmanie took on the 3,000-meter steeplechase and finished the course in 9:03.70, which is the fastest in Vanderbilt history.

Luke Churchwell also etched his name into the Vanderbilt record books, running the second-fastest time in school history in the 5,000 meters. The junior finished the race in 14:21.65, moving four seconds ahead of the previous No. 2 time held by Michael Skora.

Also competing for the Commodores today were Brady Bliven and Skora, who both ran in the 1,500-meter event. Bliven finished 10 seconds off the leader, coming across in 3:46.30, while Skora posted a tie of 3:53.75.

The Raleigh Relays continue Friday, with a full slate of distance events for Vanderbilt’s women’s team. The first event featuring the Commodores is the 1,500 meters with an expected start time of 2:30 p.m. CT.
