Ready to Tangle in Texas

Vandy begins three-day competition Friday

by Rod Williamson

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt’s busy January continues when it travels Thursday to Arlington, Texas, to compete in the Prairie View A&M Invitational Friday through Sunday.

The event occurs at the sport of bowling’s International Training and Research Center.

Starting Times

  • 11:15 a.m. Friday: Five 5-game Baker matches
  • 9:25 a.m. Saturday: Five traditional games
  • 8:25 a.m. Sunday: Remaining round-robin team game
  • 9:50 a.m. Sunday: Two championship best-of-seven baker matches

Competing Teams

If last week’s Northeast Classic was the biggest field of the year, this one is among the smallest, but it is power-packed. Half the field has won an NCAA Championship.

Arkansas State (6), Fairleigh Dickinson (14), Louisiana Tech (9), McKendree (1), Mount St. Mary’s, Nebraska, North Carolina A&T, Prairie View, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Vanderbilt and Youngstown.

Vandy’s Prairie View History

Vanderbilt has attended this quality tournament for years, but it has only won one championship. That came in 2012, aided by Brittni Hamilton’s 300 game. Its past two trips to Arlington resulted in runner-up finishes.

Last Time Out

  • The Commodores finished second at the Northeast Classic after leading the tournament nearly wire-to-wire. Nebraska prevailed in the title match, 4-2.
  • The runner-up finish marked the fourth consecutive second-place trophy Vanderbilt has won.
