Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

Baseball coach Tim Corbin is being recognized for getting the Commodores into the College World Series at Sunday’s Titans-Colts game as the 12th Titan for the game. The Titans will salute him with a video tribute as he raises the 12th Titan flag before kickoff.
Did you read the terrific article on our web’s front page the other day about 1956 Vanderbilt alumnus Jim Askew? He technically died early in the second half of last week’s Army game but thanks to quick and expert reaction by fans in his area who administered CPR, ushers, Vanderbilt police, talented Vanderbilt paramedics who used an AED to restore Jim’s heart rate and the quick transportation to nearby Vanderbilt Hospital (he was in the Emergency Room within 15 minutes of going unconscious), Jim was discharged from VUMC Tuesday. He quipped that he was hoping to attend the Arkansas game but that his wife nixed the idea in a hurry.
We had the opportunity to travel with the men’s golfers to a big tournament in Windermere, Fla. Naturally there was a lot of golf talk but school work is never far off the radar of Commodore teams. One `Dore mentioned a talented buddy who once considered attending Vanderbilt went elsewhere so that he could go a couple of weeks without opening a book. True story.
NAME DROPPING — Two former Vanderbilt Athletics administrators are now at Arkansas. Chris Wyrick, who served as Executive Director for Athletic Development, and John Erck, a former National Commodore Club official, are now Razorback development honchos.
