Quick Slant: SEC annual giving

Aug. 27, 2010

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

  • Hall of Fame Weekend is almost upon us. Next Friday’s Hall of Fame and Scholarship Dinner is sold out and will draw an audience of over 400 to see 10 former greats officially join our Hall of Fame. The Class of 2010 will be featured on the cover of the Northwestern game program and introduced at halftime. (View HOF Class)
  • Food for Thought: Arkansas, which raised $12.3 million for its athletic annual fund in fiscal year 2010 recently announced an “Answer the Call” program designed to help get the Razorbacks – who rank ninth in the SEC in annual giving – closer to the SEC leaders. The Arkansas A.D. was quoted as saying “over the last decade we have lost ground to our competition in the Southeastern Conference.” Florida and Georgia both raise over $25 million of annual gifts annually.

Those who might think the Commodores don’t need their help should know that the National Commodore Club had annual giving of $2.7 million and $5.6 million in new gifts and pledges during the same fiscal period.

  • You probably didn’t know that Vice Chancellor David Williams drove to Birmingham last week to support our soccer team in its season debut – a 5-1 win over Alabama-Birmingham. While certainly being busy on several fronts, Williams devotes a huge portion of his schedule to athletics. He typically meets one-on-one when key recruits make their official campus visits.
